About - Donations and Fundraising Campaigns
Our donations and fundraising campaignsEven before the corona pandemic, Sri Lanka was one of the developing countries. Many people live directly and indirectly from tourism, but the "big money" usually ends up with hotel chains and larger companies. The incomes of most people were and are below average, even with training or studies, and are often only sufficient for the bare essentials. With the corona pandemic, the main source of income for many Sri Lankans finally disappeared. The government lacked fresh currency because the Sri Lankan rupee is not traded internationally. Due to a lack of industry, Sri Lanka largely depends on import of goods, not least gas and oil, but these goods usually have to be paid for in US dollars, which are becoming increasingly scarce. As a consequence, a state bankruptcy followed in 2022 and the associated decline in the domestic rupee. Long before this time, we created jobs for up to 10 people with the Traumvilla, enabling them to feed their families. But that wasn't enough for us! So we used our opportunities in Germany to regularly collect donations in kind and money for the residents of Bentota and distribute them there personally. Below we have listed a small excerpt of our previous fundraising campaigns.
Schoolbook donation 2023
Kamal, a cousin of Chami, has been in contact with the schools in Bentota for several years. Every spring he calculates the number of students whose parents cannot afford to buy the textbooks for the coming school year. Kamal then uses his local contacts to collect as much money as possible so that he can order the necessary school books for these children and distribute them. Over the years, some of our guests have also noticed this and contributed with a significant amount of money donations to help provide school books to all these children in Bentota. This year, books for 773 school children could be procured and distributed at a total cost of almost € 4,000.
Glasses donation and donation in kind 2020
Despite the corona pandemic, we were again able to help a large number of people on site in 2020 with a donation of almost 3,000 pairs of glasses and other goods. Since we were not able to travel to Sri Lanka ourselves at the time, Chami's brother Rumesh took over the organization after the donations had finally arrived in Sri Lanka.
Glasses donation and donation in kind 2018
In November 2018, thanks to the help of some German eyewear shops, companies and private donations, we were able to send several hundred glasses, umbrellas and new T-shirts to Sri Lanka. On site, monks of the nearby temple organized an ophthalmologist and several nurses who examined the people free of charge and provided them with suitable glasses from the donations. We were able to help around 100 people in this way. |
